Hi all.
I acquired a broken HP 530 which has a very strange fault..# Seems that it won't run with the battery in, yet the pack seems to hold at least some charge as it gets as far as the BIOS before it crashes. With the battery in it then refuses to boot at all when on the mains, giving a momentary "HP" logo flash before it shuts down again.
Methinks the pack is hosed, however I really don't want to trash it because of a relatively minor glitch. Is it likely that some of those 350mAh DX phosphate cells could be retrofitted into the old pack casing with a homemade charger to replace the existing controller, but leave a basic voltage divider in there to "fool" the controller into running the laptop.
Obviously these are phosphate cells so there is little to no risk of any unfortunate accidents.
The idea here is not to replace the pack but to act as a backup in case the mains fails, to prevent the laptop just powering off abruptly and hosing the OS for the Nth time. BTW cost of new battery is around £110 which is outside of my means at the moment, this was a £30 laptop to begin with...

I have found in multi-cell laptop batteries two pcbs one connected to the cells for charge balance etc one connected to the first pcb and the battery pack connector this second pcb monitors and limits and reports the state of charge
I used the charge monitor/reporting pcb and a few new cells ignoring the faulty charge balancing ic ... worked ok. (Acer laptop)
