hey,
a few days ago i tried making a "capacitor", using a piece of plastic with aluminium foil sticky taped onto it, and i charged it with the flyback transformer, and it discharged with a 1cm spark! so now im thinking i will make some capacitors to make a marx generator with... will i need to use 3 dialectrics and 2 plates, if i am to roll the capacitors? 1 dielectric in the middle, a plate on each side, and a dielectric to cover the plates right?

Issue with homemade capacitors is they are leaky, and since a marx charges up slowly a lot of power would be lost, maybe to the point where there will be no sparks.

You only need two sheets of dielectric, but the outer layer of dielectric needs to be longer than the foil, assuming you roll dielectric-foil-dielectric-foil. (Or you can roll extra dielectric, if you only use the same length as foil, plus sufficient to insulate foil to foil, if that makes sense)
EDIT: depending on the former used, you can roll foil on the inside.

I would say homemade caps are fine. PPE has low losses, and if you dunked the capacitors in oil, it would be even lower. Even PPE copolymer (transparencies) would probably work if in oil. Im not really sure if PPE copolymer is more lossy, but it sure seemed that way when i made caps
