good old fashion CRT or digital storage? i'll most likely to use it to test audio amp and maybe some reverse engineering I think 40MHz should be good enough for me. what other specs should I look for when buying 1?

When you first have a scope in your house it becomes one of your most valuable tools.
I have both a old 20 MHz CRT and a new 50 MHz DSO and wouldn't be without any of them. They are good for each their purpose, situation and its always a good idea to start out with the old one if there could be a risc of damaging the scope :)
What to look for ... there are too many variables unknown to answer this, better google a guide on choosing a scope.
But I will suggest you take a look at Rigol DS1052E or newer/higher series scopes, good value for the money.
If you want a old one, get about the cheapest 2ch scope you can find, it is suffecient, don't spend money on old DSOs, even brand name 10 year old ones are slower compared to the new "eastern" scopes like the rigol.
I think a rule of thumb is that you need double the frequency specs on the scope of what you are measuring on.
