And most inefficient. For some reason the candle can't sustain a flame when lit like this, so it takes about 400w to keep a candle lit that gives out less than 1w of light... Ooo, arc lights... I'll have to add one of those to my collection of rubbish night lights

Probably because a candle relies on molten wax 'wicking' up the wick to sustain it. Maybe if you aim the laser at the base of the wick, or use a second laser to melt the wax at the top of the candle?

i think you should get more elaborate with the optical triggering of it. i'm thinkin photo sensor signal turns on a motor, which rotates an arm until it clicks a switch, which activates a solenoid that pulls on a spring loaded mercury switch, tilting the mercury until it closes the switch and turns on the laser :)

I need to mount the mirror on a moving platform that pre-heats the candle for a second or 2...

If you 'click' on the 'quote' icon at top right of the post it does it for you.
You can then use 'copy' and 'paste' to use multiple quotes in the same post.
