I'm planning to build some light led lights cheesey for my stunt kites. Those devices will have an on.board DC-dc with duty cicle controlled by a PIC micro 8pin 12series. The main problem that the pic needs 2V to start up and i want to use a single 1.5V battery. It is possible to use the pic at 1.5V @ 4Mhz?

Why not use a single Lithium cell ?
3.7v, good mAh/weight.

Joule Thief, connected to zener diode?

Someone else managed to build a microcontroller circuit which generated its own Vcc, bootstrap style.

A lot of disposable cameras use a high gain high current low voltage transistor which can be repurposed for this application, IIRC its a 2SD965.

Im thinking what sulaiman said, use a lithium cell, i cant think of a reason not to, they come in small sizes.

You're going to need more than 1.5v for the LEDs anyway - li.poly will give the best power/weight ratio

Could your stunt kite be fitted with a tiny prop driven PM generator
that would give you ample voltage and current ?

I'm struck in some desing problems. In particular the switching freq is in the range of 200Khz for a 4mhz pic (1 us each instruction), this needs a larger inductor. THe voltage is too low to turn on the pic (only to maintain the ram) so i need to use a 3.6 v lithium, wich turns on the led even at 0% duty cicle (unless i use single switch buck boost). How to bootstrap the voltage for the pic?

I was saying that the boost topology simply passes the input voltage to the output though the diode so a led will see 3.6-0.7V = 2.9V at his leads and will turn on.. What did you understand?

I will solve it using a buckboost topology using the led as the load.

If you use a lithium cell
there is no need for any kind of inverter
as both the PIC and the leds can be powered directly
.. what's the problem?
