Would it be possible to make the Resistors out of plaster of paris for a Marx Generator I like to use all homemade components, Also if this is stupid what are some good Ideas for resistors

You can try water (hard) or rubber resistors, two vulcanized rubber tracks and capacitors attached to them...

I assumed those things I have access to a large amount of plastic tubes in assorted sizes so those could be easily sealed to prevent that and retain an even resistance, by the way does anyone have basic resistance numbers for the plaster?

[Mod: Merged double post - remember: you must wait 48 hours]

There really isn't anyone? wow I thought everyone would know these things I feel less stupid!

I think plaster is basically an insulator: it doesn't conduct at all unless it's damp. So the resistance could vary very widely. The resistors would probably start out working fine, only to quit after a week or so when they dry out. I guess mixing powdered carbon into the plaster would help, as another poster suggested. This might end up similar to the so-called "carbon composition" resistors that you can buy off the shelf. But YMMV.

A classic design for a home-made HV resistor is a plastic tube filled with copper sulphate solution and the ends closed by copper plugs.

Maybe simplest homemade power resistor can be made of rubber.
It must be vulcanised (contains sulphur) its usually black, automobile-like, I have a small piece here.
I tested it on tesla coil and it conducts, barely, actually fools ohmmeter because good contact cannot be acheived and it reads >2Mohms.

Two long strips could be cut and used for marx, I never tried but it could be a good idea for something bigger...?

Plasters will obivously dry out and change resistance...

If you want all 'homemade' you could use Inductors instead of resistors,
something like this Link2

Wow that looks to be quite a bit of work for what is basically a resister. I am using a bit of limestone and copper sulphate in the liquid plus they will be sealed well, I am making about 5 or so in slightly diffrent ways and my cap array should be able to put them under some stress to test them, Yes; plaster usually is an insulator but at high voltages it does so does cement and many paints and plastics too theoretically you could use wood heck I have done it I just would not permenantly trust that, I will give you gut the input on how they turn out and a few other experiments of mine, we need better ways of doing this. homemade gives complete freedom in design so I will figure this ut in some way or another but do explain the hard rubber thing I am very curious but I am not sure I got the whore idea there

What about using carbon rods, as was done in Ye Goode Olde Days?

Plaster is porous so its resistance will vary with humidity.

I'd really recommend something else - say, carbon powder mixed with a real insulator.
