Hey again everyone, I finally decided to take apart an old monitor I had laying around, and after taking out all of its goodies, I thought i'd have a crack at making my own flyback transformer. (I have since upgraded to a 46v 15 amp supply, and it pulls 12 of those 15 available amps :D that's over 500 watts!!!) (i'll upload a newer video once I get new batteries for my camera)
Yeah, I removed the connector and just directly connected it, but the wires still get really hot. It's probably cause running the core into saturation with so few primary turns, and such a high primary voltage. Running the thing from 32 volts it works perfectly fine, but once i step up to 46 volts the wires smoke and my core gets pretty warm pretty quick. Do you think adding a few extra turns will help this problem? I want to eventually run this from a 170v supply :)

Adding turns only helps you reduce the current into the primary, if you keep the current at the same high value and increase the turns, youll just make the saturation worse. Your on time matters too. And yes your saturating it which is why you are putting in 500 Watts, but only transfering maybe 200 watts to the arc.
Okay, well it is a ZVS driver so I cant really control the on time without switching to a different capacitor. I'm not gonna do that however cause that's my Cap charger for my coilgun. Any idea on how i can reduce the high currents to a normal level?
Just ran this from 102 volts...the arcs are quite impressive (: now I can only draw like 3 amps but its still pretty neat (: I'm really pushing it though with 15v per turn on the primary...video to come in a little bit (currently uploading)
