I have purchased a 250watt electronic SMPS (£10), which can be used to drive a flyback, but it has built-in overload and short circuit protection, can I somehow overcome these?

I've also bought 2 cheap (£2, free postage) halogen bulbs to act as inductors to not set off the short protection, will this work, as I've seen the same setup and it's successful.

Will 2 flybacks with 6 turns of wire looped through both cores works nicely?

If this fails, I'll still buy/make a ZVS.

Idk the answer but if you figure it out post some pics/videos of it in action, seems like a neat idea

Hmm, thanks for your reply.

I've been searching my brains out.

I need to use a halogen lamp, it acts as a balast so the flyback won't pull large amount of current and sets off the halogen transformer, and more turns on the flyback helps, anyway I'm going put two flybacks in series.

Yes but a halogen lamp will make your circuit very inefficient. There is a way to get around the safety features, but i don't know how unless i had a schematic. If you can find a schematic that would be great.

some of them are made to work with inductive load and some other are not,for the protection ,there is tow levels of it ,one short protection witch is nice and should be kept in place ,and also a open circuit protection witch might be just a consequence of the topologies ,(self oscillating...)it can be useful to place a ferrite transformer in between your fly-back and the transformer,it's also possible to take of the ferrite inside the transformer and to replace it by a small fly-back, you will need in this case in between 40 to 60 turn on the primary (220 input)
my experience is that some of them work great and some other don't ,also ,the frequency change with the load and can reach the fly-back resonant frequency with (some time)disastrous consequences...

It's this

I've bought 2 halogen lamps to act a a load, will it work then?

the xformer arrived today, it's driving the flyback no problem but the arc wont stretch very far, about 3.5cm, and it's very hot, indicating high amperage output, so, I might use less windings as I'm using about 10, and the wire is melting on the core, I need thicker gauge wire.

Nice :)

Although I was excepting a farther arc.

If you use less windings you will have more current, I would use more windings if I were you

It's already blown, although I bet the transistors are OK.
