This is a pretty standard method of making DIY PCBs - have a look at the Yahoo Homebrew PCB group - - The current trend is to modify old laser printers to directly print onto the PCB.
Whatever method you use, subsequent Sn plating is pretty cheap and easy, and makes for a far far more resilient finish. e,g,
Immersion Tin Ormecon CSN7001 (UK) Seno Tin Powder (UK)
...and many others. For a few extra bucks, a much better finish.

Another method I came up with is to cool down the board to sub zero temperatures then wait until a micrometre thick layer of ice forms. Lay down a thin layer of inkjet ink and then use a laser to melt the ice where the board is to be etched. Then spray the board with a layer of resist, so that it will only stick to the areas exposed.
Once set, let the board defrost and etch as normal.
