Ive had results using a household lighting dimmer switch in series with a MOC to power a MOT. Can varie the output from blue sparks to firey arcs, because it was restricted to about 600W by my dimmer I felt no noticable heating.

yea that would work to vary the output of the transformer, but that's still at 60hz input. a 20khz magnetic field applied to iron causes heating as the dipoles flip back and forth creating intermolecular friction.
