The common ZVS flyback driver isn't a SMPS since it doesn't use the same topology. The hack of the current fed Royer driver was designed by Mazzilli hence the other name, Mazzilli flyback driver.

The earlier posts are valid ways of stepping up the voltage though you'd need to rectify the output of the AC flyback to use it to power a Marx generator. If you decide to reduce the number of turns on the primary, the core may be driven into saturation. Also, the higher output voltage would mean more corona which would eat through the insulation reducing the life of the transformer. Putting the transformer under oil might not help since the transformer's insulation isn't meant to stand off that voltage under normal operation.

If you want longer arcs, an increase in voltage isn't going to do all that much. Increasing the current in the arc will allow you to draw the brighter arc out longer. I think the best route would be winding your own transformer and putting that under oil. There are many threads around talking about building high voltage transformers. You don't need to make a pretty bobbin. You could use transparencies or teflon tape to insulate the windings. Make sure the turn to turn potential doesn't get too high which is mostly a problem between the layers. This can be worked around by making pancake sorts of windings.

Others may have more to say about building HV transformers if you want to go that route.

Don't the CW multiplier/Marx generator methods sidestep the secondary winding insulation problems, as the higher voltage is only seen after the multiplier stage?

Yes. This is why people use multipliers on commercial HV supplies instead of trying to wind a secondary for 50KV.
