Ok so after ruining several 555 timers I have come to the conclusion that the 6, 9, and 12 volt PSU's that run off of the mains are crap. Thus far I have been running my plasma speaker off of a 12v computer PSU and it has worked just fine. The only problem is that a computer power supply is big and bulky and I would like to downsize. Does anyone know of anything else that would work? prefferably the size of a laptop power supply or smaller

ah that makes sense, thanks. Oh one more question, the reverse voltage spikes are so great that after about 30 seconds my breadboard starts melting D: at the Gate, Drain, and Source points. I'm guessing because the wires are to small so there is to much resistance. can I just parallel like 3 small wires to each connection or do i need to make a custom breadboard with thick leads?

Maybe putting some UF4007's or similar in reverse across the lines to ground and +12V would short the spikes to ground or +12 and prevent the problem?
and you probably need more current, 10A oughta do 'er, if you can't find a laptop power supply with that much output you might try a 12V wall wart. The problem with the one you were using was probably because it was switchable, those are usually junk, try one that only puts out 12V with ample current, I know they're out there.
Or you might consider a voltage regulator to help.
