I heard about this back in 2005, but it appears that it has taken until now to develop solid state ceramic lasers to the stage that they can survive the environment found inside a petrol engine.

Fascinating stuff indeed, with possible uses in nuclear fusion and industrial scale rapid prototyping as the very same lasers could fuse together particles like a conventional FDM system.

Discuss.

My first reaction was so we'll have to 'clean our lasers' instead of cleaning/gapping our plugs, but if this results in more efficient/leaner combustion maybe this won't be the case.

I personally have my doubts

An engine cylinder is a very dirty place. good luck cleaning whatever optics this will use to focus the beam to any usable density. Im sure that after running for a short time there will be too much build up for a good ignition, and whats the point of it if the ignition scheme is useless after less then an hour of runtime?

A spark gap on the other hand, is far less prone to this issue, since after all its igniting the fuel/air mixture with an arc. Another issue as I see it is relaiblity, lasers are inherently fragile objects that are sensative to phyiscal shock, ESD and can be easly ruined compared to a piece of metal that arcs.

More or less for me: Ill belive it when I see it.

Three ignition sources seems a bit unambitious. If you're going to use lasers I think you would want to create ignition sources over a much larger area. That's what they are trying to do with barrier discharge ignition, which seems more realistic to me.

These new forms of pulse lasers do sound interesting though.

I think the cost would be an issue at this point and it would be nice to know by how much it improves the engine compared to a normal spark plug.

Buildup might be an issue, but it's possible that the laser continually burns the gunk off of itself...
I can see this being used in an ultra-clean lab setup or something, but not in a daily driver or a farm truck...
