I saw this one on that site that x-ray linked to, I think it should work well, but it might be less practical without some sort of ozone control... corona wind puts off a lot more of the stuff.

that's true, I would still love to build it though :D where are the arc[s] though? As far as I can tell from the picture, there are not any gaps in the metal rods.

No arcs, it operates by audio-modulating the corona discharge.
I personally kinda want to build a flame speaker, efficient or not...

You can see it, it's a purplish haze... try powering up your flyback with the leads really far apart, you should see it. (provided it doesn't arc on the bottom first)

ha yeah, got it. And I solved the arcing pins problem a while ago. Just put some insulation around the pin and hot glue it down, problem solved!

I actually had one emit corona inside a little air bubble in the hot glue once, purple glowing hot glue... fun till it catches on fire... smells bad cheesey

haha wow that's sweet! i arced through a water bottle once, actually the electricity went around the water bottle so it was like arcing to the bottle

If you're ever questioning how hot plasma is, stick a sock in it... my dad decided to try that one morning, burst into flames before it even touched the arc.
