Hi all,

I am browsing eBay for 450v capacitors to potentially use for my coilgun project. I am not completely under the wire but I need to purchase some soon so I will have time to meet a project deadline.

Would capacitors like these work? Or should I keep hunting for larger capacity ones that have more robust leads/etc? I am planning to wire them in parallel and charge to about 400-410 volts. I realize they don't have screw terminals, but I cannot find many in my budget range that do.

I intend this coilgun to be for a final project in my physics class. I am not too worried about it lasting for hundreds of firings, but I am willing to spend a little more for durability (but not to much haha).

Some other listings I have found:

400v no-names

one 500v 5600uF

actually that last one ^^^ might be a better bet because its cheaper, more capacitance, screw terminals, but I couldn't find anything about its ESR.

Thanks!

Link2 Here are some awesome caps, I bought two of them, they are a great deal, perfect for a coil gun. Each cap holds 182.25 Joules each, two will give you 362 joules which is plenty for demonstration purpose. With two caps I can shoot clean through 7 soda can with no weight on top of them to hold them down.

Thanks! Those look perfect! I appreciate the help.

Do you happen to know of a good place to purchase magnet wire? Actually I'm not sure if I really need actual magnet wire... maybe I can just use insulated.

I get my wire from Para wire Link2 they sell 200ft for 15 dollars which is more then PLENTY to wind a single coil. The only thing is you have to spend, I think a minimum of 20 or 25 dollars, so I just buy some cheap memory wire or what every will get me over the minimum, shipping doesn't count.

Yes you should use magnet wire the insulation will add up adding space between layers and each individual wire, its best to wind the tightest coil you can.
