The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
I have a pretty good understanding of how this flyback capacitor charger works, and I think it has great potential as a compact, cheap and efficient means of charging large banks quickly if one were to increase the voltage to the upper limits of the comparators supply voltage (around 36v if my memory serves me correctly).
Since the zvs driver's flyback output increases dramatically as one increases the voltage (I have one running on a 500w 36v power supply and it goes grrreat!) I think charging a 5kJ in reasonable sort of time is totally viable.
My knowledge of electronics does not extend to figuring what resistor values I'd need to change to get everything running nicely. The LED part of the circuit would need to go.
Has anyone run this successfully at higher voltages? Has anyone pushed it as high as 36v? What did you change to get it running? I'd love to build a self limiting ~400w capacitor charger, and I'm sure i'm not the only one!

Looking at the schematic, you ought to be able to just cut one wire and separate the supply of the ZVS part of the circuit from the control part and feed the higher voltage into the choke that feeds the oscillator. It looks like the control circuit shuts down the oscillator by pulling the mosfet gates both low through the pair of diodes, so there's no reason you can't run the oscillator part from a higher voltage than the control circuit.

Probably don't even need the LM317, a 12-15V zener diode and resistor ought to cut it. 7812 would work too and save a couple of resistors over the 317.

52V? I thought all of the 78xx series regulators maxed out 30-35V input? There is the LM317HV that's good for a bit more, although high differentials between input and output are not practical with linear regulators unless the load is very small, which in this case it ought to be.
I would just use a resistor and zener diode, total load is probably not more than 20-30mA.

I always thought the 317 was essentially the same as the 78xx series aside from the internal reference. *shrug* I never really tried using one at such a high differential, any more than a few tens of mA and you get so much heat, not that it's likely to be much issue in the application at hand.
