I was surfing youtube and came across this video. Link2 Is it just me or is this person putting himself in a heap of danger? I would have thought that some sort of shielding would be needed for this to be remotely safe. Even if he is standing behind the magnetron, wouldn't there still be reflected microwaves going every where?

Interesting video.

I hope someone who knows more than me comments here, but I guess he's running at reduced power because it is operating continuously (see my thread on magnetrons)

Link2

Also the power diminishes by the inverse square of distance.

It still looks pretty dangerous, though.

Thanks for the link to that thread, I was wondering if there was a way to control the output power of the magnetron.
Do you have any idea why he has what looks like a glass fish tank in front of the magnetron? Is he using this to try and absorb the microwaves ?

you can control the output power of a magnetron by reducing the temperature of the thermionic emitter...

You can really see the inverse square law at work, as the fluorescent tube doesn't light until it gets very close. But hopefully there's enough power left to accidentally microwave his testes and earn him a Darwin.

A world of endless possibilities.. Good thing youtube sign-up is free for anyone.

I thought that at first, but it appears not only to be empty, but also upside down. I think glass does absorb microwave radiation, though. Maybe someone else can clarify this?

from what I know ,only molten glass absorb microwave radiation..

Why then does, for example, pyrex tube not work very well for plasma/ion sources?

Quartz glass apparently works much better. I assumed this was because pyrex (and other glasses) absorbed more of the microwave energy.

I thought they used quartz because it can withstand temperatures that would destroy Pyrex.
