Tunnel diodes + negative resistance + antennae = Radar?

Hey all, I've been pondering this for a while, and was wondering if a tunnel diode could be used as a sort of low power microwave generator, if ran at high enough frequencies? Then to amplify it, you'd use a RF frequency transistor, and feed it into an antenna. But, how would you make the whole radar thing work?

I would like it to be able to tell speed, or distance, or even both, but I don't know a thing about how to make this work properly...

What you describe is possible, but all you can get without applying modulation is a speed measurement (Doppler radar). I'm also not sure why you'd use a tunnel diode oscillator rather than a transistor oscillator, I think you could make it work but you probably get better performance with a transistor. Doppler is probably the simplest radar, but it's still not too simple: Link2

That site will get you started, though it's no substitute for a proper book especially if you want a modulated radar.

If you were to make such a thing the way to go would be with pre-made oscillator, amplifier, and mixer modules unless you have some knowledge or dedication to learning RF circuits. Given the powers required to obtain an interesting range you also have regulatory concerns to worry about.
