hi, i almost finished my dc coil project, it is a 4kw dc reso charging coil. i want to test it out but i dont have a variac to slowly increase the input. im a lil afraid plugging it directly on our wall outlet cuz we have only 15A max and might blow something up. can i plug it in main breaker switch? probably to a 40A breaker. we have 60A max on main breaker. thanks link>

If you don't have a variac, what is the thing in the "power controller" photo, it looks pretty like one.
If it were me, I'd connect something like a space heater, kettle, toaster, etc. in series with the supply to the MOTs, as a ballast to limit current for the first run. If you connect it straight to a main breaker, a fault on the HV side might just burn everything. (I tested my DC coil with a variac, and only got rid of the variac when I was happy it was working.)

It looks like a little variac that he is using to control the motor speed. Nice looking coil, I've been thinking about dc coils lately, haven't seen a good one since Roger's (Ohio).

thanks steve i might series a 1000w heater for first run since thats what we have here. the one uve seen in my controller is indeed a variac but as coronafix said, i will use it to control the speed of my motor in arsg and it is only rated at 500w. il inform you guys some after i test this coil.
