A few days ago my neighbor gave me his HP DV9000 laptop because "it would not turn on." He took out the hard drive and RAM and then gave the laptop to me because I have boxes full of electronics. I plugged it in today and to my surprise it turned on, although i used a different power supply then what he used. When it turned on it made 4 loud beeps and went into [Standby mode?] (the power button blinks and the touchpad light stays on.) I am thinking this happened because there is not a hard drive or RAM plugged in although if that is not the case please let me know. My question is whether or not i need to buy a new laptop hard drive or if i can just make an adaptor to connect to a hardrive from a tower computer? (I have 5). If I can, I would like to know what pins I need to connect to eachother; The picture below is of the pin set up in the laptop.

I asked my neighbor if he wanted the laptop back and he said that if I could get it to work then I could have it. Also, he used the RAM and hard drive for something else so I do not have access to them.

looks like your neighbor didn't give you the hard drive tray.
you need to mount the harddrive on the tray then put the tray back in

You'll probably need a 2.5", most likely IDE drive and the associated drive tray for the laptop.

You need ram in there for it to turn on. The computer can't do any computing without some memory. The desktops I've worked on beeped and shut off when ram wasn't installed properly or at all.

RAM and hard drives are dirt cheap. Pick up a stick of the appropriate type of RAM and pop it in there. At that point you can try to boot it up from a CD, Linux Live CDs work nicely for this. If the thing works, then drop another $15-$30 on a hard drive and you've got a working laptop. More than once I've been given "dead" laptops that worked just fine once I got them. Usually it was the charger brick/cable or the power jack in the laptop that broke.

dv6000's are prone to issues with bad solder on the BGA graphics chip FWIW.

Heheh by melting the laptop beyond any hope of repair so you can stop worrying about it? :)

Heat gun with some shielding, or better yet, a rework hotplate and hot air gun would be a much better approach.
