Drive a standard inverter circuit with a nice ferrite transformer in it.
How much power are you looking to get?

A flyback converter - single switch, gapped transformer, diode, a filter capacitor and voltage feedback from the output controlling the duty ratio.

A CCFL inverter ought to do just fine, and they cost only a couple dollars to boot.

Depends on what you're trying to do with it. CCFL inverters are (relatively) constant current sources and have a lot of compliance. The output voltage is AC and will drift way higher under no load. This may be fine, but if he wants a regulated source of 900VDC it won't do.
