I am thinking about spraying the back of some 1/4' acrylic with spray paint to produce a good visual effect.
The problem is that the acrylic is also host to some 15KV terminals that travel through the acrylic.

Does any one have any thoughts on weather spray paint + HV will work out alright?

My initial guess is a straight out absolutely not.

Depends on the paint, and on how much leakage is acceptable.

Well it depends on the color. Some paints use carbon black as a pigment, and carbon as we all know is conductive. I really don't think anyone lists conductivity on their spray paint data sheets, so it may be up to you to do some testing.

Yea your probably right, but it never hurts to ask in my opinion.
I will test the black I have handy and let you guys know the results. Hopefully one of the professors around here has an HV Megaohm meter.

Paint a piece of plastic, connect it to a flyback and see if you can draw an arc.

I definately agree with the idea of testing with a flyback.
'Meggers' that I use test at 250/500/1000 Vdc
An insulator at 1 kVdc may not be at 15kV sc

Other than that, if the paint adheres well to surfaces it protects them
any small areas that do not stay stuck on will allow airgaps, then a film of moisture,
then corrosion and/or conductivity at high voltages.
De-grease (detergent, alcohol etc.) and dry the area to be painted well before painting.
Test any cleaners for any effects on the materials that you will paint.

Those are wise words! Insulation w/ paint is a rather dicey issue. Using a Meggar helps a great deal in understanding where even heavier insulation needs support.

so I have heard from a reliable source that Krylon paint works quite well in an HV situation (He coats his Tesla Coil secondaries with it, occasionally)

Another individual says that scotch 1603 / 1602 Insulating sealer works as well.
Black (1603), Red (1602).
