A while ago I suggested a CW multiplier using thermionic diodes. Well as proof of concept I have made a voltage doubler with 2 of them, and it would appear that they can handle the abuse quite nicely.
So, an indestructible CW may be possible using these EHT diodes. I plan on looking into this further in the future...

If I remember correctly, my old Tek 531 scope has a voltage multiplier made of thermionic diodes. The only hassle is powering them, but that's not impossible. Transformer driven by a ZVS driver with secondaries wound with HV wire would work. You can easily get enough voltage for a tube filament from a single turn.

Good point. They are certainly much tougher than silicon diodes though, and If I ever come across a bunch of them I'll make a CW with all my foilcaps I made a while ago.

If I remember right, the thermionic diodes in the original CW design had their filaments powered by small generators driven by an insulating shaft. DC motors used in reverse would likely work very well for this.
