is that tower a vacuum ? what do they mean that the static would catch the polysyrene on fire? do they use nitrogen inertion?

These towers can be back-filled with any desired gas, or operated under reduced pressure.

NASA's Zero Gravity Research Facility uses a 510 ft deep well, rather than a tower, and can be operated under vacuum.

Well ok. Its cheaper then a rocket, and many scientists can settle for short duration low G, and since most scientific projects will never get to fly on the space shuttle... this is invaluable.

In the 30 years of the space shuttle there have been longlines to get your stuff approved for any up coming shuttle flight, and few compared to the need have flown.
