Continuing the clearout, I have found a heavy "Leakage Inductance Transformer"...
It is massive, has one primary (10-0-200-220-240V @ 50Hz) and two secondaries - 0-6.3V @ 300mA RMS normal regulation, and 0-5400V RMS (open circuit)/220mA RMS short circuit... about a 8 inch cube and weighing in at about 30 lb.
Apart from scaring people, could someone explain what differentiates a "Leakage Inductance Transformer" like this from any other sort of normal transformer...
Edit: Getting a bit further on this - the HV secondary is deliberately separated from the primary to increase leakage, thus this turns into a sort of "constant power" transformer with max voltage at 0 current and max current when shorted - it will be short-circuit proof...
So I should get 5400VAC with little current draw and about 220mA when shorted, so assuming linear derating (which is a bit generous) we are looking at about 300VA.
Now I just need to come up with something to do with it. Other than land-fill, that is...

It's not a constant power transformer, the output characteristics should be the same like if you connected a choke/inductor in series with the transformer's primary winding. The maximum output power into a resistive load will be more than VA/4 because with a series RL circuit the voltages form an impedance triangle (they do not add up...)

There just seems so little out there on these beasts. This one was used in an old ion pump for high vacuum lab equipment - I'm informed that any others like this are only likely to be found in the Cavandish Labs darkest & dustiest storerooms...
