How hard would it be to make a wire bonder at home/ in a physics lab? I am trying to do a hall effect measurement and I need to create good contacts on the silicon sample. Wirebonding seems to be the best approach.
I have a few ideas to start. Get some capillaries for the tool and the wire, attach to a downward pressing mechanism combined with a speaker coil/ magnet which serves as an ultrasonic actuator. Since the side translation only needs to be on the order of about 500um I figured a speaker could handle it, if not maybe a small piezo actuator.

Ive used speaker coils to cause voids in corn starch colloidal suspensions, based on that experience and your pdf post, I think you'll have fewer headaches if you commit to Piezo now, and save yourself the headaches of speaker coils. When at Shasta College, we sourced piezo devices from Channel Industries.
As, for wire bonding, not sure how "easy" that is.

I think the tip is usually ruby or something. Design and construction would not be easy, because you are going to need very high stiffness and match vibration mode of the tip assembly that you want to the resonance frequency of your piezo element.
It might be easier to find a used manual wedge bonder on ebay or something.
