White vinegar, OTC Hydrogen Peroxide, and salt to etch PCBs. It's a slow process, but I'm thinking with a couple tweaks you could end up with a relatively fast, reliable, completely safe etching solution for under $25/gallon.

HCL + H2O2 is even cheaper, and a lot faster. I paid $9 for a gallon of acid and $3 for a bottle of 12% peroxide. I used about half a quart of acid and am still using the cupric chloride that eventually resulted. Add a teaspoon of acid and a capful of peroxide every so often as the stuff starts to slow down. I've etched dozens of boards and am still using the same batch.

Yeah, there are cheaper alternatives, and faster alternatives, but few that you can quite literally safely drink (not after etching, mind you). That's one of the biggest issues I have with etching boards is disposing of the waste.

Ill be trying this out too. I have a few litters of used/spent ferric chloride in storage, just because I have no where to dump it at the moment. It will be nice to have something that is easier to dispose of.

Surely if it's only a few litres you can simply heavily dilute it with water and chuck it down the drain. If you're worried about that then mix it with sodium carbonate (washing soda) , wait till it sets to a solid lump and throw it in the bin.

I just dont want my own ass in trouble if it damages something when I dump it down somewhere. I guess Ill keep em around.. I might find a use for it one day.
