When I was a child I always thought I would build a ruby laser pistol after seeing the adds in the back of magazines. I never did.

Years later I am wondering how far energy pistols have come along? What is out there for weapons (this includes military) that can project concentrated energy for cutting or vaporizing a target in a portable package?

Kinda weak, but people seem to like it.

Portable lasers are still pretty weak; lasers just aren't very good at the energy density thing.

I had an idea for a gun that would spray a really good conducting fluid attached to a high voltage generator such as a Tesla coil. The electrical energy from the generator would travel through the fluid and electrocute whatever you hit. The range wouldn't be all that great, but it would work well for taking out groups of enemy's.

Ideas seem to find their way into the world. I had this very idea half a year ago but decided not to talk about it because I thought the invention were too misanthropic to be offered to some wierdos willing and able to build the machine. Now let's wait and see what good comes from it. Maybe the DARPA will pick it up. Sounds just as far-fetched to me as cooking people with powerful microwave radiation. They call this stuff "solutions".

I've built a HID spotlight that so bright and cause so much glare, its painful to look at. and I just upgraded it with a xenon flash lamp. the flash lamps's strobbing frequency is around 2-4 Hz, and I'd say its twice as bright as anyother disposable camera flash. not sure if 4Hz is enough to cause seazures but I can definated crank up the strobbing frequency by using caps with smaller values or use a 12v - 200v DC to DC converter that can provide more current

Have you guys heard of elctrolasers?

Very interesting stuff. Basically using a powerfull laser to ionise air, then shooting billions of volts down the ionised path...

MAYBE they might have increased active range and are able to zapp over a 30 feet distance now...no idea.
Very interesting. Femtosecond lasers...very powerful very short pulses. Future tech. Check out the utube vid where they engrave a hair!

Femtosecond lasers usually have too low of an average power to be useful for destructive devices.
The only lasers I know of that are powerful enough to do interesting things in combat are CO2, chemical, and free electron, the last of which is not practical yet.

it would be pretty cool to hold a CO2 laser tube like a light sabre even tough the beam is invisible
