I'm looking to build a CW multiplier similar to Steve Ward's. Will appropriate numbers of UF4007 diodes work? They are fast enough, but not avalanche rated.

I've used UF4007s in a small 20kV mulitplier, and haven't had any problems. Just make sure you use twice as many as required for the input voltage, and then add 50% more for good overhead. Link2 You can find avalanche rated diodes in bulk on ebay, for pennies.

What's a good avalanche diode to use? The UF4007's I found are $0.08 in bulk on Ebay; are there any avalanche diodes for a similar price?

I used RGP10M diodes my first multiplier, they're available at 20 cents each.

1n5062 are the cheapest avalanche rated diodes I could find in this voltage range (it's 800 Volt).

Digikey doesn't have them in small amounts, but for instance TME does ... 6 eurocent a piece for 100+.

AFAIK a C-W multiplier does not need avalanche rated diodes
the recovery times should be suitable for the 'pumping' frequency
e.g. 1N4007 for 50/60 Hz, UF4007 for 20 kHz etc....

What I want to know is: Is HVCA the only primary source for HV (i.e., over 1 kv), fast recovery diodes that there is?

Most of my HV diodes are from China via eBay.

UF4007, 75nS ... whats the max freq you would suggest Sulaiman, for a full wave, square-wave driven CW?

I use the HER 108's which are 1kV, 1amp, 75nS.

If it's the seller I'm thinking about, I think he sells HVCA parts too - or they sell his parts. Either way, it seems there's only one primary source.

I have some 2CL2FM (20 kv) diodes that I was going to use in a multiplier, but I now think I'd be better off using a string of 4, 5 kv diodes. This way, there'd be a longer creep path and the power dissipation would be spread out over 4 different devices; and, depending on the diodes, I should be able to operate at a higher current as well.

I'd like to use BR5F diodes (by HVCA of course, since I can find no other manufacturer), but I can't find a distrubutor that has them and I don't see them on ebay unfortunately.
