Observing the recent discussions about electrostatic generators, I decided to post this. It's possible to generate high voltage with just insulated metal plates. Don't expect large sparks, unless you make one really big. Plates with 20 cm of diameter would be quite "schoking". A multiplier that I recently built, that triplicates its charge at each cycle:
 But the most practical is probably Bennet's doubler:
