The largest solar flare since March of 2006 occurred this evening at about 9pm EST, 0200 UTC. It has been preliminarily graded as an X2.2, and is Earth Directed/Geo-Effective. R3 radio blackouts are already occurring on the HF bands, with a near complete blackout occurring below 30MHz for about 2-3 minutes immediately following the flare.
No word yet on the CME associated with it, but this flare has a history of producing extremely fast, but fairly low volume CMEs with the 3 M class flares it's produced in the last 36 hours. Be on the lookout for Aurora, particularly above about lattitude 40N. Aurora is already occurring above 60N, and is expected to continue and extend its range over the next 3 days.
