Yeah, I did wonder about how well a dart alone would work magnetically. Maybe something simple like a magnetic cross head screwdriver bit, with matching slots on the projector? Even fancier, an electromagnetic bit that turns off when you pull the trigger so you can get a better 'grip' for spinning.

I just tried using a motor from an engraver that I scavenged the batteries from for my other coil gun. I did it really crudely but it seems to have worked a little, I'll do proper tests tomorrow... The motor has a piece of pipe connected to the rotor... the pipe is slightly bigger than my projectile size, which is 6mm 30mm long sharpened tip... I wrapped 3 layers of paper around the projectile and pushed it into the pipe, strong enough to hold while it spins but weak enough that the coil can pull it out. I tried the motor and it spins the projectile really fast, this is with 5v input from an ATX pc power supply. I charged up the capacitors, turned the motor on and held it so the projectile was just entering the coil. I discharged the banks into the coil and sure enough it pulled the shot out of the paper wrapping and hit the foam target without any visible flipping. Because its 9PM here and everyones getting to bed I couldn't do a long distance test, so this was only 2m away but I still think it may have worked! I need to come up with a better way to hold the projectile to the motor...

I might just be overly excited, so tomorrow I'll try set it up better. As badly as I'll be flamed for this... I only have one camera charger left so charging takes like 2 minutes... because my coilguns are all made into cases and I don't want to take them apart. I know this is a common question but is there an easy way to make a capacitor charger with scavenged parts? I have fly backs from old TV's just I have no money or way to buy components at the moment or anytime soon... I think Ill try something like blutak to hold the projectile to the motor shaft tomorrow, I cant think of anything to use...

Good job!!! Seems like it helped a lot. You may not need to spin it up as fast as a rifle does because there is less torque on the projectile making it want to flip. If possible, shoot through some tissue paper or something really thin. If there is a small hole then the projectile went straight through. If there is a rip you know it was tumbling.

Yeah great idea, I'll give it a go sometime soon :) Also I can work out m/s using the same method cant I? set up two pieces of paper a meter apart and record the audio of the projectile piercing both pieces and see how much tine is in between? then average it to a second?
