hmm.. sounds like he was pretty close to making a fundamental breakthrough. Recall that many common chemicals superconduct at cryogenic temperatures.

What Tesla hoped to find was a low resistance path through the upper ionosphere, which wasn't too well understood in his days. He wanted his 'magnifying transformer" to couple to this layer where another coil would resonate and draw on the path.
