I'm looking for some insight from folks who have experience with *big* Lithium Polymer battery packs. The one I have in mind is 11.1v (3 cells) 6AH. It will of course have a proper, professionally designed protection circuit, but I'm curious if the big batteries are any more or less forgiving than the smaller ones I've used in some of my RC vehicles.
I'm also eager to hear of any pitfalls anybody encountered, or things to be aware of when purchasing.

i have a fair number salvaged from old apple macpro batteries.
It appears that the protection circuit is essential if the cells are to remain stable and not swell up or worse. Interestingly this can be an early indication of EOL on lipo packs, as it can precede capacity loss.

I use Zippy Flightmax Lipos 11.1V 5AH 20C discharge for my RC monster truck and I have over 100 charges on 3 of the 4 packs, one died from me using it for crude amplifier power source without any battery protection or charging the battery first.
They are pretty much the same as your little ones don't over charge and don't over discharge, for long life I usually set cutoff circuit to 3.2V/cell under load.
Sort of irrelevant but a 3s 6AH isn't what I'd call big, the 44.4V 15AH packs and similar sized packs that some aircraft users use is what I'd consider BIG.

second on the turnigy batteries. sometimes there is a dead one, but its still work the price, especially now that they have a US warehouse. I have one of their 25.2v 5AH Lipo's, but one cell was dead so I had to cut it off.
They also sell fiberglass charging sacks incase of fire.

they do do returns, but you have to make the claim the day you recieve the battery, and pay shipping back. it will be better with the US warehouse, but problems are not too common (more common than brand name at anyrate). The turnigy's ones are better than the Flightmax, go for those.
If you want brand, Thunderpower is great. When searching, look for RC helicopter batteries.

Dave Hobbyking's a great supplier for RC related stuff, as for your lipos the turnigy and Zippy are in house re-brands I think so are rhinos if I'm not mistaken, but from what I know the Zippy packs are great, and from what I hear the Turnigy packs are good too.
