Hi all,
I pulled this from a 'twin tub' washing machine, its certainly the biggest shaded pole motor ive seen, but then again I havnt seen that many motors....
I pulled it appart to de-spider it, the washing machine had been sitting outdoors for quite a while. Here it is re-assembled
The plate on the machine says this motor is rated for 500 watts!
I also found this series-DC/Universal motor in the machine, apparently 250 watts:
This one was infested with 'white tip' spiders, the other was full of big black spiders of some sort....
How large can shaded pole motors be made before efficiency is really a problem?

Vienott says that shaded pole motors are made up to 1/4 HP. The shading rings are around the smaller segments. Pumps and fans use them because they can work over a wide torque and speed range. They are simple in operation, and they are the only AC motor that cannot reverse rotation. This is an important aspect, since loads often apply reverse torque and other motors fail in some way and get spun up to a reverse operating speed and just keep running backward.

It is, you cant see it very clearly in the photo though. The two sets of windings are connected in opposite polarity, there are four shading poles.
What happened to the sleeving on the lead wires?

So Im guessing that the '500w' is the electrical consumption, so about 125w mechanical power? It seems like a pretty bad choice of motor for the application if that is the case...

Please tell us where the power rating label was attached. Did the shaded pole motor have a seperate nameplate, and if so what data was on it?
Ahh no sorry I think Ive confused you. No the motor doesnt have a nameplate, the washing machine does, but it gives a power consumption for both motors seperately: it says the 'wash motor' (the shaded pole) is 500w. This would be power consumption not mechanical output power!
