I have several unused SOT-227's on heatsinks, mostly from quick lashups of SSTC and other junk,
also several IGBT bricks laying around (both phase leg and single device packages).

At the moment I currently have no use of them, as Im busy with other things (studies, etc), so I wanted to put them away in storage and when I have time to, Ill play with them later.

I was thinking to put tinfoil around the main screw terminals, shorting them all out and then insert some static foam around the tab leads (per gate), would this be sufficient enough to protect them while they are in storage?

If you have a better way, Id love to hear about it. It will be dissapointing to take them out for fun and find out that they dont work anymore.

Stuff like this really isn't that sensitive & I wouldnt do anything.
Tinfoil is a really bad idea and could be worse than doing nothing. As there is the risk of a metal (foil) to metal (pin) discharge with much higher peak current.

I would agree that these items are not as sensitive as others.
FYI, even the act of touching foil to a device without first discharging the static in your body can damage it.
If it is sensitive enough! If you are worried, touch a piece of metal plumbing pipe (or the faucet) before you handle
any esd sensitive device. There are more advanced ways to deal with the matter but in this case it would work fine.
There are static dissipative containers as well, like tupperware bins, they are relatively cheap!

Call it a bad habit..

But to discharge myself, (I often work with SMD parts and diode lasers, laser diodes are very sensative) I have a small outlet near my work desk, I just touch the small screw that holds the cover on it, knowing it is directly tied to ground.

I manage to get a fat snap off me once in a while.

After that I usually just put on an anti-static wrist strap thats attached to my computer chasis (closest thing to me)

This is in no way overkill either, I can tell you a few times I shot off a good spark to a part, and never had it working again.

I'd suggest anti-static foam, Gates and static dont get along :P

The gate is the main thing you need to worry about. Either wire it straight to the emitter or a piece of antistatic foam will work
