Remember that soldering contest we never had? .

1295222719 2893 FT0 Dsc09332

I built that just to see if I could. It took 3 hours and all I had was one of those big radioshack irons, which certainly didn't make the job any easier.

But does it work?

The only things that get warm are the 330 ohm gate resistors. The 35A 120v 11.5mOhm MOSFETs stay ice cold. It runs at 56kilocycles according to my scope.

Now all I have to do is convince plasmana to give up his tiny flyback!

Dear Heavens man, you put that together with a "GUN-type" soldiering iron?

I kept the pic. Blown up to it's fullest......I didn't think a Mazzilli could even get that tiny. It looks like the parts held freely within a closed fist.
The choke looks like the ones in computer PSU's.

No, not a gun, but petty close to it. The metal part on this iron is like 5 inches long. Link2

I pulled the inductor from a dell monitor. I tried to get a better pic but my camera died, I'll get a better one when the battery's full.

Pix I promised. Pick your favorite:

A little contrast adjustment may be needed.

I have a pic of it running this lamp via a homemade x-former, but I haven't tested it with a flyback yet. I'd like to find a tiny flyback.

*cough* plasmana...

A more informative thread title wouldn't hurt either. "OMG Coolest hand-wired ZVS ever?!"
