Should there be an air gap on flybacks when using them for half-bridge drivers?

I am trying to build an half-bridge driver (using the TL494 as the oscillator) to drive a flyback transformer on 240v mains. I read somewhere on the web that you can remove the air gap as the flyback transformer is not being driven in flyback mode anymore and put on approximately 40 turns for the primary. I did so but the transformer was saturating very badly. I then made another primary consisting 80 turns of wire and tested it out again, it is still saturating bad.
So now I am wandering should they really be an air gap for my flyback transformer or am I doing something wrong?

What frequency and duty cycle are you running? If the core is saturating, try gapping it. The details depend on the characteristics of the core you use, I don't know how much variation there is.
You ought to be able to drive it from rectified mains using the original primary winding in flyback mode too, normally the B+ is 160-180V but higher ought to be ok if the duty cycle is limited accordingly. You will need a good snubber though.
