I just acquired a used Staco 2510. It came without a knob or dial, which I purchased new (ouch!) for ~$75 each...
I have a couple of questions before I put it into service: (1) The brush looks pretty worn to me; it's almost to the non-carbon metal on one side. See picture. Should I spring another ~$71 for a new one?! (2) The brush assembly does not press against the winding, as I would imagine it should. If I were to attach the knob tightly it would hold it properly, or if I put in a small leaf spring of some sort, it would apply a constant binding pressure. Are these things supposed to have a mechanical means of applying pressure between the brush and the winding? (3) I'm not sure what the grey plastic bit on the back is supposed to do, but it has a couple of hairline cracks in it. See photo. Is there something I should know about this little grey bit?

Update: After removing the contactor plate, I discovered that (1) the carbon brush had been pulverized between two windings and (2) probably the same pressure that caused 1, above, destroyed the plastic/ceramic axel that the rotor turns on. The rotor was only held on by the three-point set screws on the aluminum shaft. It pulled right off.
Mystery solved: It's a case of either poor packaging or UPS gorillas.
Yeah, those knobs are insanely expensive. The dial was $85! I'm going to try to return them to AlliedElec. Oops.
