Hey all,

I attempted to knock up a Mazilli type flyback driver last night:

--First attempt with IRF250's which I forgot to isolate from the heatsink. After adding insulation i was able to pull an arc for maybe 1 second (5.5 A @ 20 v from a SMPS) , after which there was no output. All parts were stone cold at this point.

-- Thinking I may have killed my FET's with too small an inductor (~25 turns on an unknown core) I rewound the inductor with ~ 45 turns of MOT primary wire (~1.2 mm), and replaced the FET's with IRF460's I had on hand.

At this point I get nothing-- No output, no high pitched whine, and a measured 5 mA current draw @20 v input.

My capacitor is 3x2 1uf MKP X2's to give 0.66 uf, I believe the core I am using is iron powder (significantly more magnetic than ferrite, and salvaged from a 12-24v DC-DC converter)

Any suggestions as to where I should look for the problem would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping its something stupid and inane that I've clearly done wrong.

Cheers

My interpretation is that you need ferrite rather than iron powder cored inductor.

This probably doesn't address your question in full.

(I'm still working out how the Mazilli ZVS circuit works, but iron powder only works for low frequencies. Some-one please correct me if I'm mistaken.)

I reckon ferrite core is applicable cause it works under high freq.

try to use G80N60 (IGBT), u will get better arcs.

But an ungapped (as toroids usually are) ferrite core will saturate if there is a DC component in the inductor current, and most of the inductance disappears. Some people has claimed that it works for them, but in these cases it would work exactly the same with a much much smaller iron powder-cored inductor.

are you supposed to be using wire wound resistors?
that added inductance there might cause it not to oscillate.

you hav to use fast diode's, what type do you use now?

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'm planning to rebuild with new components, and 2W carbon film resistors on a veroboard (inductor and FETs off-board)

The diodes Im using are UF4007's. Im waiting for some IRF260s in the mail, but I'd at least like to get SOMETHING using the 460s

**Edit --SOLVED**
********************************

So it turns one of the alligator leads I was using was open circuit!!! GARR If you want to waste 3 hours of your life, do as i do, and be sure to check such things LAST.

I did rebuild the driver on strip board (minus inductor, capacitor, and FET's), and I've spent the evening pulling fiery 5.5 inch arcs @32v. My smallest flyback got hot fast, and has already died open circuit.

Any ideas on what to do with a smallish ferrite core?
