It's a bit shameful that my government can't figure out anything better than paralleling well over 1000 Japanese gaming consoles to make a supercomputer...
But then again, now the USA can brag about having the best PS3 bank along with its rail-gun capacitor bank!

Rather surprising I guess. I didn't think you could parallel PS3's. Hopefully it goes to good use because that is a rather big amount of money...If that update screws things up, then that's an issue. However I'm sure they just avoided updates as the system was most likely working fine when they had it up and going.

PS3 were great a few years ago, but are now only good at solving certain types of problems.
Typically, the super computers of today use low-cost cores and GPUs: ...about $4k to make your own 8GPU card node...
Yet it still depends on the type of problem people are attempting to solve.
People should have bought Sun before Oracle turned over their core design to business strategists.
It will cost a meager $1.7 Billion for the next generation technology, but bureaucrats have never embraced disruptive technology... and will only fund existing research programs.
China and India have the money and fabrication facilities....
There was a time when a US company would produce anything you wanted as long as you purchased 10000 units.... The next Bill Gates or Steve Jobs will not come from North America...
