I recently received my 3M Trimax 8 X-ray cassette from eBay. I will be making a lead box, somehow, sometime, and i had an idea of how i might simplify and cheaplify (it's a new word, deal with it) the design.
While the front of this cassette is obviously X-ray transparent, the back side is a blocker. It is the color of lead, but much harder. The blocker is about 4mm thick, and it is 21 year old, not that that is relevant. So, my question is what the blocker is actually made of? I figured some sort of alloy, but it is non-conductive. Or, a better question might be, will this blocker attenuate x-rays to a safe level if i where to use it as one of the 'walls' of the lead box? Here are some pics of a similar one, only differences are the dimensions.
I will be using doubtfully more than 30Kv into a high voltage stabilizer tube for the X-ray source.

Sounds good, i will just put the cassette in the box. I guess it makes sense it would only attenuate enough to keep from having scattered radiation affect the picture. Now, to find some lead...
Edit: Instead of starting an entire thread, i figured i would ask here. I found this bit of lead flashing
Each 'tile' would weight a bit less than a pound. How thick would that make it? If i am over my pnemonia by tomorrow, i will check some home improvement stores for lead flashing, but it isn't very thick. This is my first experience with X-rays, and though im pretty sure i know what is going on, i want to know that i have enough shielding.
Also, @ Anders, no, this is not a beryllium window tube. But, i just want to start small. I know this tube can handle 50kv, as it has been proven once before, but i just need to keep the plate happy, it is less than 3 watts dissipation. So, if i need more penetration, i will just lower the current some and raise the plate supply.

Thank you so much Proud Mary! I really should have done more research on that item :(. I think I will buy those sheets of lead, it would sure make making a box easy!
