Hi. Please list here known faulty/defective products in general use which can cause problems.
1) K*ng*ton brand "mini" microSD USB adaptors. These are the older thick variety but often encountered in "bargain" packs with the cards, or included with phones etc. DO NOT USE with >1GB cards, they overvoltage them and can fry the card to the point of data corruption and 1st degree burns if you touch it after its been copying for a while. They work perfectly with old 3V3 cards but not the newer 2.7V ones where the phone correctly identifies them and generates the right Vcc, see I personally lost a £50 8GB to these sucky adaptors before finding out the problem months later from a third party.
the newer ones are untested by me but may work, check before using your expensive card though.
2) M*tsui set top digibox. Due to what I assume to be buggy firmware the internal memory gets corrupted to the point that the box freezes and/or loses its stored channels, seen this on all of my boxes. This can manifest itself without any warning whatsoever, and can happen in the middle of a programme, see Additional faults include sound vanishing randomly, defective SCART port that wobbles around and only works with certain leads. etc. Avoid!!
3) "Thumbscrew" type battery charger. Great design, lousy compatibility. Tried with several batteries, works on 75% of them as long as you use the mains adaptor it came with. One I had problems with was an Olympus camera battery.
If you use it with the wrong adaptor, even if the voltage and current match and it appears to work fine the firmware cycles at about 50% charge and carries on charging.. and charging.. and charging... and KABABOOM! Luckily I got to it before it committed flambuku but it could have been a lot worse. Scary bulged red hot Li-Ion and it was still charging... ! Shame 'cos its a nice concept, epic fail in the failsafe department though.
I would add 4) "tough" pendrive but this was caused by a defective USB port on a laptop so i can't really blame the drive.
feel free to add to this, no Microsoft versus Apple bashing please. this thread is for hardware only.
