I wanted to create an airtight seal for this cover I made to go on a tube, but I also wanted to make it so that It wont be impossible for me to remove it once I put it there, so I didnt want to use things like epoxy.

My plan was to use some silicon gasket sealant both on the lip of the tube and on the bolts itself, but I dont know if it will be enough.

Anyone have any suggestions to what material to use?

there will be a gas tube connected to that hole in the center, and I would like to prevent any of the contents from leaking out. (probably around 5 PSI at most)

Picture of the end cap and a crudly drawn MS paint diagram of what im trying to do:

Thanks for any help and suggestions you guys have.

the tube is made out of T6-6061 aluminum, same as the cover, and is about 1/2" thick.
its temperture will be typically -5C, it will not vary much outside this range.

edit: typo I meant -5 celcius, not 5 celcius

eh.. indium is a bit more then I would like to spend for a gasket.

I was thinking more along the lines of something one could find in an auto/marine store.
I just dont know what product that could be used other then silicon gasket sealer (but im not sure if this stuff likes cold so much).

Im going to check around a bit.. there must be something.

How about rubber sheet? The compression would make it airtight and you could cut it to any shape you want.

DOH!

why didnt I think of that before
since the rubber wont really be moving, no need to worry about it cracking or anything.
with 8 bolts on it, its not going anywhere in a hurry.

Thanks Grenadier, that should do.

Messing with a cooling system for a white laser im building, this little jar of wonders will be filled with nitrogen.

main purpose is to replace ambient air inside the module (once I seal it up completly) with nitrogen, just to convect heat better. this is a fairly small and tight build, and will be running at decent powers, so some approach is needed without resorting to peltiers, but it wont get too cold as the modules will stop working (especailly those DPSS greens that just LOOOOOVVVVVE cold *sarcasm - text sucks at it*)

Ill post pictures in the next while of the build if things work out nicely. hopefully accompanied with some nice white beamshots.
