I think I've finally made up my mind, I'm gonna go with the gu-5b,

first (It doesn't say this on the data sheet) do the filament pins face down during operation?

will the filament take 60hz?

can it be water cooled just like in liquid plasma?

Normally a glass envelope tube would be mounted with pins down or to the side. With a tube like the GU-5B that have a jacket it needs forced air cooling, it will be enough for shorter runs, water cooling could get expensive to make and its more of a mess than air.
As long as its sufficiently cooled -i do not think the direction matters

You could supply the filament with 12.6V DC, if not from a heavily filtered large rectified transformer, then some car batteries, but watch the voltage closely, if you supply a filament with less its rated voltage you risc that the electron emission will go from the polluted materiel and ruin the tube.

Those kind of power tubes are supposed to work ONLY vertically (the internals sag from heat and time). And most of the GU series are suppoed to work with pins UP.

And one more thing - I don't advise you on building your first coil on a GU-5 ... build something small and then go on to the big stuff.

Cheers
