I added more stages to my marx gen today. Now there are 28 stages, 6kv each. Because of that it has a low firing rate, usually a spark every 4 seconds. I guesstimate it gives me 170kV.
13 sec exposure:
It's a real PITA to get the first few spark gaps set since 6kv gives you all of .5mm leeway, but it works.

Congrats on the monster-setup, but why did you do it like that?
Splitting that extra-long tower in half would much improve your charging times, and keep the potential difference levels to half per each tower. Good thing doing the change is easy:

The idea of the "Frame" radhoo made was excellent. I wanted to copy that with the ability to 'adjust" the width of the gap; so that the sections could be adjusted for supply strength. There was a lot of detail that I liked in what was done with the "frame" concept. The covering for the active sections made it fairly tough and long lasting, especially if transported. When you're dealing with a .5mm adjustment I would imagine there was a lot of frustration in setting that.
I wanted to find (make) some actual "spark gaps" that could be inserted into the unit. Small enough not to be clumsy but yet strong enough to "hold" a proper setting.
Sometime back I saw what was known a "spark-gap" capacitors (they were HV; about 15Kv) I never knew their purpose but they had a minute "cut" in the top of what looked like a ceramic disk cap.

Thanks. It came as a natural consequence. I started like Grenadier, then split the Marx in two for evident reasons. The best way to fix the two, was the frame. Also going on vertical saves a lot of storage space.
BTW, since you've mentioned it, you might have seen the transparent plastic cover I've used both for my marx and the 50KV CW supply here: . It was taken from PET bottles. You can cut it with scissors and if you press it to a given angle it stays like that - very useful, and good HV insulator.
