LCR meter is a device which can measure L (inductance) C(capacitance) and R(resistance). My point was, if you get such a measuring device, you can actually measure the inductance of your coil (as well as resistance of any conductors in your circuit), experiment with projectile position in it and base your calculations on actual values. The formulas for solenoids are all nice and stuff, but you alter their inductance the second you place any ferromagnetic objects near them. I was thinking your physics teacher might have such things. That was why I said it :).
Wish I got to do such stuff before uni :D. Not that im studying anything even remotely connected to high-energy physics - its just architecture :p
PS. How "good" does it have to work? Do you just need to show that it can shoot stuff for a few meters (or yards or whatever floats your boat), or do you want it to actually be able to penetrate some thin plexi or sheet metal or so?
