I need to find a map of the telegraph lines in western new york. There are a few (now defunct obviously) lines near a few rails, and all the poles still have the insulators. At $5 resell value each, a few miles of telegraph could easily add up to some big bucks...

It's not like the company would care if I took them, and they'd probably say yes. It's just a matter of finding out who owns the lines. So, can anyone help?

I'd assume it'd be whoever owned the property the lines were on? I doubt the railroad would let you do anything with them, too much of a liability.

I used to rent an apartment right by the tracks. (Probably the same rail line you're looking at, CSX & Norfolk southern?) I had been eying up the scrap pieces of wire that were still there, but figured it wasn't worth much after finding out it was copper coated steel. Never considered the insulators to be worth money.

Well maybe if I sign some kind of contract with them that any screwups are my fault, not theirs they'll be more understanding. If I can get permission this will be my summer job, collecting these things. So I have some time to figure this out.

I don't think the property owners own the lines since they are all of 10 feet from the rails. And yes I'm pretty sure they are the CSX tracks, but I'm not certain.

Any trackage in use that has lines and poles beside is considered
operational. They may look like telegraph circuits, but they may
be important signaling circuits which will alarm if they are damaged
.
Get hold of the model railroad buffs, they will tell you much; some of
them are old railway men.

Something tells me you're either going to get arrested or hit by a train. Maybe both.

For years I had a pile of 11 and 33kV powerline insulators that my dad and I salvaged from old power lines. (They were obviously unused and safe because the poles were lying on the ground and the wires were gone. smile ) They used to sit amongst the potted plants in the garden. Eventually they got tossed away.

The 33kV ones were really substantial, about 12" in diameter, 12" high and 20lbs weight. You don't realise how big they are when you see them at the top of a pole.

I'll ask some of those model railway men then. These lines are certainly not being used though as there is no wire! There are also lines near few abandoned rails, I'm not sure if they still have any insulators though.

Yes I've seen the huge ceramic ones up close. They are quite heavy.
