Hi all!
I have 12 doorknob ceramic capacitors for impulsive purposes:
1289672968 1728 FT0 Pict0510

Each are 20KV and 680pF (+/- 20%). I would like to use them in a marx generator, with a flyback transformer (driven by a zvs royer) as power supply. But i have no idea about the output high voltage of the flyback transformer (if >20KV or not) and i don't want to destroy my capacitors. What configuration might i use? Should be used two capacitors in series for each stage or i can use only one (and makes more stages)?

Regards
Simon

пФ = pF not nF.

Your capacitor is 680pF = 0.68nF

A 680nF 20kV capacitor would be large, and expensive.

Very nice caps smile. I have been wishing i had some like that, or some more of the 20kv 650pf caps i had. (i have only 4)

Using the royer circuit, with 12v in, should give you about 20kv. That is what it gave me. Then, if the spark gaps are set at 20kv, the voltage should not get any higher, even if the other gaps don't fire right away, because the cap would start discharging through the resistors into the spark gap.

For a good example of the voltages/spark lengths to look for, here is my video with a setup very similar to what you want. It is the same driver, a random LOPT, and 4 stages with some nice HV resistors from PFC capacitors.

Thanks Proud Mary for the correction smile.

Okay, so there are no risks to destroy them using a royer circuit. Arcstarter might you link here your video about your marx generator smile? I'm curious to see your work and i want to take it as example.

I had the exact same caps a couple years back and i built a 6 stage marx powered using a zvs. The caps are very robust, I was running about 3 to 4 bang per second and they never even got more than a little warm. I can tell you right now that it is going to be loud.

Nice video Arcstarter! How many long are the sparks? But in particular... where did you buy that HV resistors amazed? I think to use 3 normal resistors in series... but i don't think that it is the best choice!
Electroholic, do you have a video about your marx generator?

No vid, but i do have one surviving photo of the setup.
i used a series string of 3x 1/2W 470k metal film between each stage.

Best of luck with yours.
