Has anyone tried building a circuit for driving FBT within spec utilizing the original primaries? Sure output wouldn't be as beefy but stability must be useful for some projects?

I'm sure it could be done with a 555 timer and an IRFP460. I say the IRFP460 since it's a 400V FET and the FBTs are usually run at 100 something volts on the boards.
It's much simpler to just wind your own primary if you can because that way the FBT will work better on a lower voltage. There are circuits out there that use the internal primary, but as you said, there isn't much power to be had.

That's the only approach I've ever used. When I take the trouble to construct something, I want it to last, and hopefully be better than something you could buy to do the same job, or there's no real point in making it. I don't have the resources in either time or money to commit to something that's poorly designed from the outset and doesn't work properly.

I made several, always using the original primary coil. In some I used also the switching power supply taken from the same board, that already produces the right voltage. In one I took out of a monitor board the complete power supply and the flyback drive circuit.

I have done this with that single transistor driver... It was a long time back... I used another winding for feedback. I got muuuuch better performance than with an external primary. Not sure why, maybe better coupling a more efficient number of windings.
